Privacy Policy

Who we are

RestaurantSafe.org is an independent public-interest project. We document how each U.S. state and the District of Columbia publish restaurant health inspection results, explain how inspections work in plain language, offer a free self-check for operators, and recognize restaurants that turned a poor public record around. We are not a government agency and nothing here is legal advice.

What stays in your browser

Look Up a State. Filtering the state directory happens entirely in your browser against pages we already published. Your search text and filter choices are not submitted to our servers.

Self-Check. The ten-minute self-check runs entirely in your browser. Checkbox answers are never sent to us, never stored on a server, and disappear when you close the tab. There is no account and no email gate. You can print or save a PDF locally if you want a record.

Information you choose to send us

Email. If you write to us, we receive whatever you include in the message (typically your email address and the content of the note). We use that to reply and to correct the site when needed.

Most Improved nominations. The nomination form asks for restaurant name, city and state, a description of what changed, optional links to public records, your name, email, and relationship to the restaurant. Submissions are sent to our own endpoint on this site and stored in a HubSpot CRM contact record so we can verify and follow up. We use your email only for that nomination. Nominating does not guarantee recognition.

Do not put Social Security numbers, payment card numbers, or other sensitive identifiers in email or nomination fields. We do not ask for them.

Hosting, logs, and third-party scripts

Cloudflare. The site is hosted and delivered through Cloudflare Pages. Like most hosts, Cloudflare processes standard technical data needed to serve pages and keep the network secure (for example request metadata such as IP address, user agent, and timestamps). See Cloudflare’s own privacy materials for how it handles that processing as a service provider.

Cloudflare Web Analytics. We measure aggregated traffic and performance with Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-oriented beacon from our host (enabled via Cloudflare’s site token or automatic injection for this zone). It is not an advertising tracker and is not used to sell personal data. Cloudflare states that Web Analytics does not use cookies or localStorage for measurement and does not track individuals across other websites with third-party advertising cookies.

SearchAtlas OTTO. Pages include a SearchAtlas dynamic optimization script used for search and content optimization. That script is loaded from SearchAtlas. It is not an advertising network pixel. We do not use it to sell personal information.

HubSpot. Nomination data is processed in HubSpot as described above, under our instruction, to run the recognition program.

Cookies and similar storage

RestaurantSafe itself does not set first-party analytics or advertising cookies. The self-check and state filter do not write answers to cookies or local storage. Third parties named above may set or read technical data as part of delivering their scripts or hosting the site; we do not use that to build marketing profiles for sale.

Advertising and sponsorships

We do not currently display advertising or sponsored placements on this site. We may later accept ads or sponsorships on some pages to support the project. Recipient pages in the Most Improved recognition program will not carry advertising, as stated on the recognition page. If advertising practices change how we collect or share information, we will update this policy.

We do not sell personal information

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not use nomination or email content for unrelated marketing lists.

How long we keep things

Emails and nomination records are kept as long as needed to handle the request, verify recognition candidates, and maintain ordinary business records, then removed or archived when no longer needed. Browser-only self-check answers are never held by us. Server and edge logs follow our host’s retention practices.

Children

This site is aimed at adults who look up inspection systems or operate restaurants. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Your privacy rights (including California)

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to personal information we hold about you, correction, deletion, or information about how we use it. California residents may also have rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know, delete, and correct personal information, and the right to opt out of “sale” or “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not sell or share personal information in those senses.

To make a request, email [email protected] with enough detail for us to find your information (for example the email used on a nomination). We may need to verify your identity before responding. You will not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

Changes

We may update this policy as the site or the law changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after an update means the revised policy applies to that use.
